3 Hurt In Wrong-Way Crash On I-495 In Wareham
WAREHAM (CBS/AP) — State police are investigating a wrong way crash on Interstate 495 in Wareham that ended up with three people hurt.
Police say just after midnight Friday they received reports of a pickup truck driving south in the northbound lanes.
As troopers were responding the wrong-way operator struck multiple vehicles.
The wrong-way driver, identified as 24-year-old Kevin Schmidt of Middleborough, was flown to a Boston hospital with what were described as serious injuries.
Two drivers of other vehicles were hurt. Lise Calixte, 26, of Randolph was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Eileen O'Donnell of Falmouth suffered minor injuries but not hospitalized.
Louise Calixte says her sister Lise doesn't remember the crash. She's in the hospital with a bruised lung, fractured ribs and cuts to her face and eyes.
"She's doing well. We're just happy she has life," Louise Calixte said. "She remembers somebody coming; she saw a car approaching her at that point, averted; veered off to avoid the car."
Calixte says she's praying for everyone involved in the crash, including the wrong-way driver.
The northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for about two hours. The crash remains under investigation and there was no word on charges.
