$250K Bail For Woman Charged With Smuggling Cocaine In Diaper

EAST BOSTON (CBS) – A woman accused of trying to smuggle cocaine into Logan Airport in a diaper was ordered held on $250,000 bail Monday.

22-year-old Karen Morla Ramos pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in East Boston District Court.

She flew into Logan Sunday morning on a Jet Blue fight from the Dominican Republic. While passing through customs, investigators say she gave conflicting answers about her trip, which then led to a pat down.

That's when officers say they found a "powdery substance concealed in a diaper-like garment" under her clothes.

The substance turned out to be more than two pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $100,000.

Prosecutors say the diaper was strapped to her thigh.

Ramos allegedly told police she was given $800 to transport the drugs and had initially tried to swallow them.

Her attorney Rochelle Burgos said Ramos is a poor woman who was the victim to a big-time drug dealer.

She is due back in court for a probable cause hearing April 21.
