Northeastern Student Charged With Attacking Women In Mission Hill
BOSTON (CBS) – He is charged with a vicious crime. The police mug shot of 21-year-old Patrick Barry shows him minutes after his arrest Sunday with scratches on his face.
The college student hid his face behind a door at Roxbury District Court Monday and was out of the view of cameras as he was charged with armed sexual assault and attempted rape.
It was all in connection with one attack on a woman early Saturday morning. He has not yet been charged with a second attack around the same time.
His image was captured by surveillance cameras in Mission Hill around the time of the attacks.
In court, the Prosecutor for Suffolk County, Elizabeth Riley, said in the first assault Barry grabbed the woman and attempted to "cut off her clothes saying he was going to rape her." The woman went to the hospital bleeding from minor stab wounds.
These were particularly frightening attacks because in both cases police say the victims were young women walking alone and in each case the assailant jumped out from behind a bush armed with a knife.
Barry, who has no prior police record, allegedly attacked the first woman at Huntington Avenue and Vancouver Street around 2:00 am.
Another woman was assaulted a few minutes later a short distance away. It does not appear that Barry knew either woman.
Both locations are just a one minute walk from Barry's apartment which he apparently shared with three others.
Boston Police were searching the apartment this afternoon.
In a statement, Northeastern University said, "We are pursuing appropriate action in close coordination with Boston law enforcement authorities. Consistent with federal law we cannot comment further on an individual student's situation."
The judge set bail at $30,000.
