21 Displaced By Northbridge Apartment Building Fire
NORTHBRIDGE (CBS) -- Gil Fryer of Northbridge says his two cats just might have saved his life.
They woke him up very early Sunday morning, just about the same time a huge fire broke out at his apartment building on D Street.
"My cats woke me up this morning, wanting to get out of the house and I smelled smoke," he says.
The fire heavily damaged the six-unit building, and left 21 people without a place to live including seven children. The fire started in a vacant unit.
No residents were hurt, but a firefighter did suffer a shoulder injury.
Jeff Barr was sleeping inside when the fire started. He says he could see flames shooting up through a stairwell and ran to knock on everyone's door to get them out.
The building was badly damaged by the flames, but the owner says he's more worried about his tenants right now who must now find a roof over their heads.
For now, the Red Cross is caring for the families.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
