2014 Boston Marathon Banners, Commemorative Bracelets Unveiled
BOSTON (CBS) - The 2014 Boston Marathon banners were officially unveiled in a small ceremony on Boylston Street on Thursday.
Race sponsor John Hancock designed the this year's approximately 500 banners, which all go along with the race theme of "We Run Together."
Special honor banners were also designed and will hang in front of Marathon Sports and Forum restaurant to mark the spots of last year's bombings as a tribute to all those affected.
"This year, we have the opportunity to reflect and draw inspiration from the strength and courage of all those affected by last year's tragedy– by the heroics of our first responders and caregivers, and by the countless acts of selflessness throughout our community," Mayor Walsh, who attended the ceremony, said in a statement.
John Hancock also announced that it has taken last year's actual race banners and cut them into honor bracelets. Each of this year's 36,000 race participants will receive a bracelet, and a limited supply will be made available for the public to purchase.
Hancock has picked up the administrative costs on the bracelets, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the One Fund Boston.
The bracelets can be ordered online at www.crowdrise.com/braceletsforboston, and can only be picked up at the John Hancock Sports and Fitness Expo over Marathon weekend.
