2 Girls Injured In Billerica Hit & Run
BILLERICA (CBS) – Two teenage girls were struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Boston Road in Billerica Wednesday afternoon.
The victims, who are both Billerica High School students, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the driver fled the scene after the crash.
About two hours later, a 35-year-old Billerica woman went to the police station to admit her involvement in the incident. She was cooperative and provided a statement to police.
The driver, who has not been identified, was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of personal injury and two counts of failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The driver's husband didn't want to explain what happened or why his wife took off. "It was an unfortunate incident and the good news is that the kids are comparatively OK," Kaplan Tolia told WBZ-TV.
Kailee Imbody was one of the teens who were hit. Her family wants an apology.
"I'm glad my niece is okay because she's a like a daughter to me," said Katie Humphrey, Kailee's aunt.
"How do you do that? How do you not stop and make sure they're OK?"
Billerica Selectman Daniel Burns calls the crash "extremely disappointing."
"The town has invested a lot of time and effort in the last year to improve pedestrian safety in the center and the crosswalks are all brand new," Burns said. "You know it's a matter of education for the drivers regarding crosswalk safety."
The vehicle was recovered at the driver's home and towed to the Billerica Police Department for processing.
