DA: Police Fatally Shoot Weymouth Man Who Killed Mother

WEYMOUTH (CBS) -- A 49-year-old Weymouth man stabbed his mother to death before he was fatally shot by police officers early Monday morning, officials said.

Police said they responded to a home on Prospect Hill Drive after getting a call at about 1 a.m. for someone apparently needing medical assistance. Upon arrival, officers found a white man armed with one or more knives, District Attorney Michael Morrissey said.

Two police officers made a simultaneous decision to fire their weapons, killing the suspect, officials said.

Patricia Campbell, 72, was found dead of stab wounds on the stairway leading to the front of the house. The suspect was identified as her 49-year-old son Paul Campbell, who also lived at that address.

Paul Campbell was the father of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh's girlfriend's adult daughter, the mayor's office confirmed.

"This is an extremely personal situation and I ask that Lorrie and Lauren's privacy be respected at this time. This is an ongoing investigation and it is not my place to speculate on why or how this happened. My focus right now is on my family, Lorrie and Lauren, and their well-being," Walsh said in a statement.

"There is no such thing as a routine call," Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes said.

Neighbors told WBZ-TV that the man shot by police had a couple of small movie roles in "The Fighter, and Ted."

"She was a very nice woman and it was very unfortunate circumstances," neighbor Marie Dooley said.

Weymouth police said the officers were taken to a hospital to be evaluated. Both are 10-year veterans of the force and are now on administrative leave.
