2 Boys Pulled From Brockton Pond After Falling Through Ice

BROCKTON (CBS) -- Two boys, 9 and 12, were pulled from an icy Brockton pond on Saturday night.

Randy Pierce heard a frantic knock on his door for help after two boys had fallen through the ice of the Plouffe Academy Pond.

He said he raced from his apartment complex across the street and jumped the fence. Two other men were already rushing into the water ahead of him.

"Both kids were submerged. They were both under," Pierce says.

He said the two Good Samaritans in the water struggled to pull the 9-year-old to shore. Pierce said he helped get the boy to land, and once the child regained consciousness he said "My friend is still there."

Pierce said there was no sign of the 12-year-old.

"No bubbles, it was murky and cold," Pierce said.

Roodler Jean-Baptiste says he jumped in and went under the water looking. When firefighters arrived, they found the 12-year-old under the ice.

Both boys were rushed to the hospital. The 12-year-old is in critical condition.

Jean-Baptiste was treated and released from the hospital. Pierce was proud of his fellow good Samaritan.

"The first person who went in and submerged himself...he's the hero," Pierce says.

Pierce, a father of three, says he was thankful he was not the only one who dove in to help.

"It's to the heart. It punches you right there, but it's good to think we have Good Samaritans out there," he said.
