Days After Being Thrown To Sidewalk, Malden Baby's Recovery Called 'Miracle'

MALDEN (CBS) -- Relatives of the 7-week-old baby allegedly thrown to the ground by his father are calling the infant's recovery "miraculous."

Carmelo Sears suffered multiple fractures, including to his skull and leg, after police say his father, Edward Carlos, threw the infant onto the sidewalk during a domestic dispute last Thursday.

The baby was listed in critical condition at a Boston hospital, but now his grandmother Charlene Nickerson says he is able to open his eyes and smile.

"He looks at you, he smiles, he's kicking, he's looking around and he's just a happy little baby, like it didn't even happen to him," Nickerson told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz.

"We can't believe how well he's doing," Nickerson added.  "It's like a miracle."

Carmelo has two older sisters, ages 4 and 7. Nickerson says both girls can't wait to see their baby brother back home.
