14 Plead Not Guilty After UMass Super Bowl Riot
BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (AP) — Fourteen people arrested during a post-Super Bowl disturbance at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst have pleaded not guilty to various charges including disorderly conduct and failure to disperse.
They were released on their own recognizance after being arraigned Tuesday in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown. Four are charged with inciting a riot.
Thirteen are UMass students, and could also face discipline under the university's code of conduct.
An estimated 1,500 people gathered in a common area of the Southwest residential area on campus Sunday night after the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17. It took police in riot gear and smoke bombs to break up the crowd. No damage or injury was reported.
Pretrial conferences have been set for some of the defendants for March 1 and March 2.
