13 Rescued From Elevator In East Boston

BOSTON (CBS) - Firefighters rescued more than a dozen people who were trapped in an apartment building elevator in East Boston early Sunday morning.

The fire department received the call at around 4:30 a.m. about a pregnant woman stuck on an elevator and about to give birth. They rushed to the scene on Border Street and found no pregnant woman. Instead, 13 young people were trapped in an elevator on the 4th floor and they weren't very cooperative, according to authorities.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

"They were loud, they were boisterous. When you're trying to rescue, it helps that they can quiet down and listen to what you're telling them," said fire spokesman Steve McDonald.

McDonald said crews rescued those people that were trapped by going up to the fifth floor and accessing the roof of the elevator.

"We put a firefighter in a harness, went down, opened up the hatch of the elevator, and then escorted the 13 people one at a time up both sets of elevators," said McDonald.
