Bus Crashes Into Auburn Home
AUBURN (CBS) - Chris Erickson was on his way home from work when he got the call. A Worcester Regional Transit Authority bus had crashed into his Auburn home. "I was just so worried about the kids," he said.
When he finally got a hold of his wife, she told him she was in the shower when she heard a bang and saw the toilet fly out of the wall. She and the couple's three sons made it out with cuts, scrapes, and bruises. "Thank God nobody was in the kitchen," said Erickson.
A neighbor across the street said he happened to be looking out his front window, when he saw the bus speeding out of control. "The front end came up and I saw a woman go over a couple seats in the bus. I blinked. I couldn't believe I was actually seeing what was in front of me," said Tom Mosley.
He went to the hospital after he cut his finger helping the kids get out of the home. He said he also saw four passengers, who got out of the bus without serious injuries.
The driver was trapped under the weight of the bus and the house. It took firefighters an hour and 15 minutes to get him out. "He was alert," says Auburn Fire Capt. Eric Otterson, but he said the driver's injuries were serious. Fire officials do not know what caused him to lose control of the bus.
They say the home on Swanson Road is in danger of collapsing, since the bus moved it seven feet off its foundation. It has been passed down through generations of the Erickson family. They are heartbroken, but thankful their injuries were not more serious.
