10 Businesses & Several Rare Vintage Cars Destroyed In Charlton Fire

CHARLTON (CBS) - A total of ten businesses were destroyed in a fire that leveled a Charlton warehouse Thursday night.

One of those businesses was housing about 15 rare vintage European cars at the time, several of which were ruined.

"This was my worst nightmare," owner Gary Cove told WBZ-TV's Bree Sison. "Me and my wife jumped in the car and came around the corner and this place was just engulfed in flames."

Cove has devoted 15 years of his life to fixing and selling luxury cars.

One car that was saved, a rare Alfa Romeo that came in for some minor adjustments, was set to be sold for at least $160,000. Cove said that was one of the cheapest cars he was servicing.

The cars destroyed in the fire include a Shelby Cobra, a 1933 Rolls Royce, vintage Porsches and Jaguars.

"It was kind of like a little museum, a working museum," Cove said.

A Mercedes Roadster worth $1 million was saved.

But Charlton officials admit that more valuables might have been spared if working fire hydrants were close by.

The town has no functioning municipal water supply, so firefighters had to drive about a mile to Glen Echo Lake and pump out the water.
