WWII Medal Of Honor Winner Paul Wiedorfer Dies, 90
BALTIMORE (AP) -- World War II hero Paul J. Wiedorfer, a Marylander who won the Medal of Honor at the Battle of the Bulge, has died at 90.
The Baltimore Sun reported in online editions Thursday that Wiedorfer, a longtime Parkville resident, died a day earlier at the Loch Raven Community Living and Rehabilitation Center.
The Sun, which interviewed Wiedorfer in 2008, noted he won the nation's highest military honor after charging across a
snow-crusted Belgian field under enemy fire to take out two German machine gun nests and capture 24 prisoners on Christmas Day 1944.
"Something had to be done, and someone had to do it. And I just did it," Wiedorfer recalled in the 2008 interview.
The battle was one of the bloodiest fought toward the end of the war in Europe.
