Wright Has 23, George Mason Defeats UMBC 74-63
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- Sherrod Wright scored a career-high 23 points to lead four George Mason players in double figures as the Patriots defeated Maryland-Baltimore County 74-63 Tuesday night.
Wright was 8 of 11 from the field for George Mason (6-3), while Marko Gujanicic added 14 points, Jonathan Arledge 11 and Erik Copes 10.
The Patriots led 21-4 after eight minutes, extending the lead to 30-11 with 4:04 left. The Retrievers closed out the half on a 9-0 run and Ryan Cook hit a 3-pointer to open the second half, making it 30-23.
After Copes and Wright answered with jumpers for George Mason, UMBC again chipped away, trimming the lead to 45-39 on another Cook trey with 13:59 to go. But UMBC could get no closer despite shooting 54.8 percent in the second half (17 of 31).
Brett Roseboro scored 14 points, Chase Plummer added 13 and Cook 12 for the Retrievers (2-6).
