Woman Stabbed At Arundel Mills Mall; Suspect Arrested In Baltimore City After Police Pursuit
HANOVER, Md. (WJZ) -- A woman is robbed and stabbed right outside Arundel Mills Mall in the middle of the day. When the suspect takes off, it all leads to a wild police chase through the streets of Baltimore.
Meghan McCorkell spoke with witnesses caught in the middle of the action.
Witnesses say they saw that suspect driving erratically, nearly hitting people and followed closely by police.
Weaving through traffic at dangerous speeds, a wild police chase ends in West Baltimore.
"We were scared for our life," said Curtis Jones.
The driver of the SUV--49-year-old Broderick Bennett--was arrested after he crashed into a rowhome.
"He was just dodging in and out of traffic. We thought he was going to run head on into us. We were scared. We thought he was going to straight crash right into us. It would have killed us," Darnell Dickens said.
Police were pursuing Bennett after they say he robbed a 36-year-old woman at knifepoint in the Arundel Mills parking lot. She was getting into her car when he pulled a knife and demanded her purse. When she struggled, he stabbed her in the hand. Witnesses identified his car as the green Acura SUV. It was spotted by a state trooper on MD-295--who tried to stop Bennett--but he kept going.
"It's just very dangerous everywhere," a woman said.
Management at Arundel Mills released a statement to WJZ saying in part:
"We credit local law enforcement for the quick arrest following this isolated incident."
From Sky Eye Chopper 13, you could see the massive police response.
"On the ground we've got Maryland State Police, we've got the Baltimore City Police, Baltimore Sheriff," said Captain Jeff Long.
The SUV left a massive hole right in the side a building. A city building inspector had to be called in to make sure the entire structure is stable.
Bennett faces armed robbery and assault charges.
The stabbing victim is expected to be OK.
No police officers were injured in the chase.
