Woman Seriously Burned In Elkton House Fire
ELKTON, Md. (WJZ)—An Elkton area woman is currently in serious but stable condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center with burns to 40 percent of her body after a fire broke out inside her home Thursday afternoon.
Laurie A. Brown, 49, was discovered by her mother who lives next door, just before 2:30 p.m. on the front porch of her home on Otter Point Road with severe burns and heavy smoke and flames coming from the house.
Maryland State Police Aviation transported Brown to Bayview Burn Center with second- and third-degree burns to her lower extremities.
Sixty firefighters from Singerly, Rising Sun, North East and Chesapeake City controlled the blaze within 30 minutes.
Deputy State Fire Marshals say the fire started in the front living room of the small, one story, single family home. They also determined no working smoke alarms were present.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Damage is estimated to be $50,000, and the home is considered to be a total loss.
