Woman Remains Hospitalized After Shooting By DC police
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A woman shot by a District of Columbia police officer remains hospitalized as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.
Police say the woman, who is now being identified as Renita Nettles, was armed a knife when an officer shot her early Saturday evening in a low-income housing community. Police say she refused commands to drop the knife as she approached the officer, an account that was confirmed by witnesses who spoke to The Washington Post. Bystanders captured the shooting on video.
WUSA9 obtained cell phone video of the dramatic incident which shows the intense moments leading up to the shooting.
The officer is on routine administrative leave. A police spokeswoman says the officer's name will not be released. Police did not provide an update on the woman's condition on Sunday.
A spokesman for Mayor Muriel Bowser says the mayor has remained in constant contact with Police Chief Cathy Lanier as the shooting is investigated.
Nettles was charged Sunday with assault on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon and arson, WUSA9 reports.
