Woman Pleads Guilty To $100,000 Insurance Fraud
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A woman has pleaded guilty to getting nearly $100,000 from an insurance company by falsely claiming her young son had been repeatedly hospitalized.
Shirley Rae Owens, 30, of Arnold entered the plea to theft scheme on Tuesday. She faces up to five years in prison at sentencing Jan. 9.
Prosecutors say Owens, who had worked at the insurance company, had given birth to twins in 2007 and at first, one child, a boy, had medical issues after birth.
The Capital of Annapolis reports that prosecutors say even though the boy did not need additional hospital stays, Owens continued to file claims.
Owens fraudulently claimed her son had 395 overnight stays at the hospital, totaling $99,500 in benefits.
