Woman Charged With Stealing Social Security Benefits

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore woman has been indicted on charges of stealing nearly $200,000 in Social Security benefits after a friend died.

A federal grand jury in Baltimore indicted 63-year-old Patricia Green Jackson on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, Jackson was friends with a woman identified as J.W., and was a co-singer on her bank account. Prosecutors say J.W., whose Social Security benefits were paid by direct deposit to her account, died in 1997.

Authorities say the Social Security Administration was not notified of J.W.'s death, and continued to pay her monthly benefits. Prosecutors say Jackson used a debit card to withdraw the money from J.W.'s account.
