WJZ Awards Jerry Turner And Al Sanders Scholarships
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— WJZ is proud to announce this year's winners of the Jerry Turner and Al Sanders scholarships.
Kai Jackson reports this year there are seven recipients and all are high achievers with big dreams.
On the club level of M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, sit the hope and promise of America—66 young people who are receiving scholarships for college.
The Baltimore Ravens distributed scholarships to several students.
"To give these kids an opportunity to get to college to better themselves, to better the community of Baltimore or wherever they're going or wherever they're going to end up, is just an awesome opportunity," said Matt Stover, former Ravens kicker.
A mix of donors provided $169,000 in scholarship funds. Some of the recipients will be freshmen while others are currently in college.
WJZ is proud to have awarded scholarships to seven students.
The Jerry Turner Award goes to those majoring in broadcast journalism. Sarah Hermina won and is heading to St. John's University in New York.
"After researching him I learned what a difference he made in the community and also how I want to do the same thing with spreading awareness about certain issues and portraying it in a way that's understandable to the audience," Hermina said.
The Al Sanders Award is given to those focusing on music studies.
"My main thing that I'm going to school for is recording, so I like to make albums and stuff like that," said John DeBold, Al Sanders Scholarship winner.
Scholarship recipients tell us with the high cost of college these days, every dollar that they receive really helps.
Jerry Turner and Al Sanders were long-time anchors on WJZ-TV. The duo left a lasting legacy in journalism and community service.
"It may not sound like a lot but compared to a $30,000 tuition a year, $2,000 can really help me," said Tashauna Thompson, Jerry Turner Scholarship winner.
The other scholarship winners are Caitlin Gompf, Tyler Keller, Kathleen Cheung and Jessica Manuel.
