Marylander Holding $125 Million Christmas Present
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- One lucky Marylander is holding on to the ultimate Christmas present Sunday night-- a winning Powerball jackpot ticket worth $125 million.
Derek Valcourt has more on where the lucky ticket was bought.
A liquor store in Elkton, Cecil County sold what some might argue is the greatest gift of all.
On Telegraph Road in Elkton, Wesley's has been selling liquor for decades but never has the buzz been this strong.
"It's mind boggling as heck how this thing happened to us," John Wesley, owner of Wesley's, said.
Wesley can't believe his family-run business just sold the $125 million winning Powerball ticket.
He proudly showed WJZ a copy of the prize-winning numbers-- 14-16-30-51-52, Powerball was 19 with a Power Play of 2. The ticket automatically earns his store $25,000. But after taxes, the winner walks away with nearly 52 million cash.
"I would say good chance they are not a regular," Wesley said.
He knows many of his customers and says the Powerball winner has already called the store to confirm his numbers.
"One of my employees talked to him and he said he got the ticket here, and they asked the number," Wesley said. "The guy said, 'I'll be in two days to see you. I want everything to settle down a little bit.'"
This is only the second time that a winning Powerball jackpot ticket has been sold at a Maryland store.
"We spend every Christmas eve here and on my way out, my husband bought a ticket," Terri Wilfong said.
Wesley's regular, Wilfong, hoped she was the winner. But not so. Now, she and the rest of Elkton wait to find out whose Christmas wish is coming true.
"There were a lot of people in and out yesterday, so I hope it's someone that really needs the money," Wilfong said. "You know, it's a lot of money. It's going to change their lives for the better, I hope. But a great Christmas present. A really, really great Christmas present."
A lottery spokesperson says that so far, the winning ticket holder has not officially come forward. They say it's not uncommon for winners to wait a few days before claiming the prize, because as you can imagine, it can be quite a huge shock.
In September, a Harford County couple came forward to claim a $108 million jackpot.
