Wife Charged With Army Husband's Murder In Laurel Says He Tried To Sexually Assault Her
LAUREL, Md. (WJZ)—A woman accused of killing her military husband remains behind bars with no bail. The 30-year-old woman turned herself in Saturday after her husband was found stabbed to death inside their Laurel home.
Rochelle Ritchie reports with why the woman said she did it.
The woman told investigators her husband tried to sexually assault her right before his murder.
From the outside, neighbors on Frostwood Drive say the home of Johnnie and Marquita Sutton appears to be that of a happy family.
"It's the most decorated house on the street for Christmas," said Lucie Wegert, neighbor.
But the gruesome murder behind closed doors shows it was anything but.
The horrific scene unfolded Friday after police say 38-year-old Johnnie Sutton, a soldier in the Army, did not show up for work. Concerned co-workers called 911.
And what police found inside is sending shock waves through the community.
"We went there. We met with the landlord, made entry into the home. That's when our officers discovered a body inside the home," said Lt. T.J. Smith, Anne Arundel County Police.
Johnnie Sutton was found wrapped in a blanket. His head was wrapped in a dark plastic bag.
His wife was nowhere to be found until Saturday when she turned herself in and was charged with second-degree murder.
In the charging documents, Marquita Sutton says her husband tried to sexually assault her. She grabbed a stun gun and used it on her husband. She says her husband began assaulting her again. She ran to the bedroom, grabbed a knife and stabbed him several times.
Neighbors say even if she was sexually assaulted, killing her husband did her no justice.
"There are places she could have gone or could have gone to a relative. She should have thought about her baby," a neighbor said.
Marquita Sutton admitted to investigators she tried to conceal her husband's death. She remains in jail. The couple's child is now with relatives.
The child was not harmed during the incident.
