White House Fence Jumper Charged With Unlawful Entry
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Police are holding a homeless man who jumped the fence at the White House, but officials have determined the backpack he was carrying did not contain explosives or weapons.
The man was identified as James Dirk Crudup, 41. Secret Service Spokesman Max Milien says he's being charged with unlawful entry.
Crudup was quickly seized Tuesday evening by uniformed Secret Service officers, then transferred to Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police. A television camera captured the arrest, with video showing Crudup being led away across the White House North Lawn. Milien says the backpack was later examined and cleared by experts.
Millen says President Barack Obama was at the executive mansion during the incident but was never in any danger.
