When Disaster Strikes: Red Cross Calls For More Volunteers
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is always ready to jump into action. But with recent storms and fires, the organization is in need of volunteers.
Monique Griego has more on what it means to be part of their team.
When a storm destroys a neighborhood or a fire leaves residents homeless, along with police and emergency crews, the Red Cross is there.
"Any calamitous event -- as they say -- that occurs, that people need assistance, we respond to," said Richard Scanlon.
Scanlon has been volunteering with the Red Cross Chesapeake region for almost seven years.
During that time he's helped countless people affected by floods, fires and other disasters.
"In some sense we're all adrenaline junkies," Scanlon said. "I think that's part of the allure. At least it is for me."
And as the recent derecho storm proved, you never know when disaster's going to strike.
These unpredictable events can put a strain on volunteers so more are always needed to help with emergency food, shelter, clothing and counseling.
"There has to be an earnest desire to help, and based on that we'll train you. Whatever skills you need, you'll be trained," Scanlon said.
While Scanlon admits the job isn't always easy, he says it is rewarding.
"The best way I can put it for me is I feel better on the way home than I do on the way out," Scanlon said.
