Western Michigan Beats Md-Eastern Shore 68-51
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Brandon Pokley scored 14 points as Western Michigan beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 68-51 on Saturday.
Shayne Whittington and Darius Paul added 13 points each for Western Michigan (3-1).
Nate Hutcheson, who had a career-high 30 points in Western Michigan's 81-71 win over Loyola of Chicago on Friday night, scored 10.
"It's rare that somebody's going to go for 30, and I thought Maryland-Eastern Shore came in with a game plan that was really designed to take Hutch out of it," Western Michigan coach Steve Hawkins said. "So, I was proud of everybody else's effort. But I was also proud of Nate. This is the first time that he went into a game with a scouting report based on stopping him."
Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-5) got 12 points from Troy Snyder. UMES lost 78-59 to South Florida on Friday in the opening day of the South Florida Invitational.
"I thought we did some things better in terms of execution at the offensive end," UMES coach Frankie Allen said. "Defensively we did a pretty good job for the most part."
Hutcheson had eight points to help the Broncos take a 30-23 halftime advantage.
Paul made a jumper and Hutcheson had fast-break basket to put Western Michigan ahead 43-33 with 11:00 to play.
Whittington's 3-point play extended the Western Michigan advantage to 48-37 at the 12-minute mark.
UMES went up 15-12 on Kyree Jones' 3-pointer and a basket by Snyder midway through the first. Snyder's long-range jumper got the Hawks within 36-31 just over five minutes into the second.
Jones and teammate Ronald Spencer both finished with 11 points.
