City Firefighters Investigating West Baltimore Rowhome Fire
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- City firefighters responded to a home in West Baltimore Wednesday morning after a report of people trapped in a fire.
Gary Hughes was driving his daughter to school when he saw smoke and a woman screaming on the sidewalk.
"She said, 'my brother's in there," Hughes said.
He looked at the house and could see fire bursting through the windows. Yet, he still ran inside in an attempt to help.
Hughes screamed out to the person trapped inside.
"He said, 'I'm upstairs,'" Hughes recalled in an interview with WJZ.
Hughes told him to jump down the steps, but the voice refused.
"He's like, 'bro, I'm scared, please help me,'" Hughes said.
Hughes couldn't get upstairs. He said the steps were too hot and the flames were getting bigger.
The roof began to cave in from the first floor, forcing Hughes out of the house.
Seconds later, the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived.
Hughes told the firefighters about the person trapped inside, "I said, 'there's somebody in there' and boom, he ran in there."
Firefighters pulled everyone to safety and the fire was under control by 8:30 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
