Weather Stops Some From Finishing Bay Swim
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The director of the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim says weather interfered with the annual event for the first time in at least 20 years.
Race director Chuck Nabit says about 70 swimmers were pulled out of the water Sunday afternoon because of the threat of thunderstorms. He says about 150 of the 620 people who started the 4.4-mile swim were still in the bay when organizers got word of a possible storm. Eighty were close enough to swim to the finish, while the remaining 70 were pulled out of the water.
Among those who did not finish was Craig Dietz, a lawyer and motivational speaker who was born without arms or legs. Nabit says Dietz was having a strong swim and would have finished if not for the weather.
