WEATHER BLOG: Rough Ride
Thursday morning has already seen strong storms and a series of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
And while we are getting a break in the action right now, any sun this afternoon could really bubble things up.
Thursday will be rough. There's no doubting that -- with rainfall totals expected to exceed 2 inches in parts of the WJZ-TV viewing area.
We are anticipating flooding.
Most of the flooding will impact streets, highways and areas of poor drainage. However, since there was some locally heavy rainfall late last week and also on Monday, the amount of rain that would exceed the threshold for river and stream flooding is not all that high, only about an inch or so. Therefore, in addition to storms which should cause some hail and straight-line winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, we should be talking about flooding and possible tornadic activity, especially this afternoon and early night.
Friday will be a cooler and less humid day, with clouds and some peeks of sunshine.
As the low-pressure system heads out into the Atlantic, the breaks of sun interacting with some relatively cold air aloft could generate enough instability to cause a couple of showers and a thunderstorm. However, the activity won't be nearly as widespread, nor will be as heavy as Thursday.
Saturday is looking much nicer, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures back in the 80s.
With a blend of clouds and sunshine on Father's Day, temperatures should reach the upper 80s and we'll need to be on the lookout for a late-day shower or thunderstorm.
