Wal-Mart Pitched As Frederick Redevelopment Anchor
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A developer in Frederick says a third Wal-Mart store would reverse the decline of the Golden Mile retail strip along U.S. 40 on the city's west side.
The Frederick News-Post reported Thursday on the proposal by DLC Management Corp. and Rockwood Capital.
They are seeking a zoning change to allow a Wal-Mart at the virtually abandoned Fredericktowne Mall. The existing Home Depot and a Boscov's' department store would remain on the site.
Wal-Mart has two other Frederick stores. Wal-Mart representatives say a third location, with about 300 new jobs, wouldn't be too many.
Alderwoman Shelley Aloi says she's concerned that Wal-Mart could hurt smaller retailers. The land is currently zoned for mixed commercial and residential use.
