Volunteers Help Veterans Have Merry Christmas
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The holidays can be a tough time of year for people hospitalized and away from friends and family. Adam May reports volunteers reached out to some of the most deserving people---our veterans.
As music fills the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, volunteers hit the hallways, visiting every patient.
First stop: veteran Reginald DiSante.
"It's rough just laying in a bed," DiSante said.
But Christmas just got a little brighter. More than 600 packages were delivered.
For some vets, it may be their only visit of the holiday.
"They have given to our country and it's time to give back to them and not forget them," said volunteer Theresa Smith.
"When we go around and distribute the gifts, the veterans...their eyes light up. They'll brighten up and feel better," said organizer Dallas Renninger.
Navy veteran Michael Heinrich wasn't expecting the hospital stay or the presents.
"I found out I have to stay here through Christmas. I didn't know...I really appreciate all these gifts," he said.
But volunteers say it's the least they can do.
"I wish everyone has a merry Christmas and a happy New Year," DiSante said.
