Virginia Tech Routs Mount St. Mary's (Md.) 99-34
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Erick Green scored 17 points to lead five Virginia Tech players in double figures as the Hokies routed Mount St. Mary's (Md.) 99-34 on Sunday.
The win was the fifth straight for the Hokies (9-4) and the 65-point victory margin was the school's second-largest ever, ranking behind only an 81-point, 105-24 win over Washington & Lee on Jan. 9, 1959.
Tyrone Garland scored 16 points, Jeff Allen had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Malcolm Delaney and Manny Atkins scored 12 points each for Virginia Tech, which shot 69.2 percent (36 for 52) to 17 percent (9 for 53) for the Mountaineers (3-12).
A layup by Garland gave Virginia Tech a 99-32 lead with 2:19 remaining, but the Hokies failed to surpass 100 points after missing two shots, two free throws and committing a turnover down the stretch.
Lamar Trice, with 16 points, was the only Mount St. Mary's player in double figures.
