Md. State Police Investigating Death Of 10-Year-Old Cecil County Girl
PORT DEPOSIT, Md. (WJZ) -- Heartbreak in northern Maryland. The community is still shocked by the murder of a 10-year-old girl. Kami Ring was found dead in the woods in Port Deposit.
Meghan McCorkell reports dozens honored Kami Ring Wednesday night.
It seemed like everyone who lives in the community of Charlestown came out to remember a little girl lost too soon.
Mourners surrounded candles in the shape of a heart and a "K" for Kami Ring. Family members, friends and neighbors gathered to remember her.
"This is terrible. How do you deal with it?" said Susie Mistler.
"When I heard, I was heartbroken. It hurt a lot," said David Poole.
The 10-year-old's body was found Monday in a field across the street from a home owned by people that she considered her grandparents. Police believe she was likely snatched out of a bedroom window as she slept Sunday night.
"We just can't believe it. We can't believe that somebody would do something so horrible to her," said Brittany Dotson.
She spent every day after school at the Boys & Girls Club. She is remembered as a bright child who loved singing.
"She was like my best friend," said Maliyah Cruz.
The death has sent shock waves through the normally quiet Charlestown community. Police tell WJZ they have a person of interest in custody but no charges have been filed. The news isn't easing tensions.
"She said, `Please lock all the doors and windows," said a mother.
Now the community is coming together to heal from the tragedy.
"I know Kami is at peace and now she is a new angel for all of us," Dotson said.
Ring's body has been taken to the medical examiner's office. A cause of death has not been released.
State police have arrested a man who lives in the home where Ring was snatched on an unrelated drug charge.
