Views Mixed On Frederick County Slots
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The possibility of slot machines in Frederick County is getting a mixed response from local residents.
The Frederick News-Post reports that 12 residents and two county commissioners spoke at a hearing Wednesday night in Frederick held by the county's legislative delegation.
Commissioners President Blaine Young says he favors slots and table games like those offered in nearby Charles Town, W.Va.
But Commissioner Paul Smith opposes the idea. He says casinos prey on people who are already struggling financially.
In the last legislative session, two delegates from outside Frederick County introduced a bill to put a slots parlor in the county to lure gamblers away from Charles Town. The bill died in committee but could be resurrected in 2012.
Such a measure would require a state constitutional amendment.
