Va. Police Name Person Of Interest In Christopher Cummings' Death
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- There's a possible break in the murder of Congressman Elijah Cummings' nephew.
Mary Bubala reports police in Virginia have named a person of interest in the death of Christopher Cummings.
Christopher Cummings, 20, was shot in killed in June at his off-campus apartment near Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
Now investigators have a person of interest in the shooting death of Christopher Cummings, giving his entire family some hope the killer will be found.
"The 10th of September will be three months since my son was murdered, and so I was honestly losing confidence," James Cummings, Christopher Cummings' father, said.
"I am convinced that one person can break this case open, just from what I know about it," Rep. Elijah Cummings said.
Court documents show the person of interest is a 20-year-old man from Newport News. Police say a witness identified the man in a photo line-up. Court documents say he was involved in an incident at Christopher Cummings' house hours before his death.
Christopher Cummings' father says his son never felt safe in that neighborhood.
"It's very difficult for me because he was at the age where we were becoming best friends," James Cummings said.
And for the first time, his mother is reacting to the news that police are closing in on a suspect.
"Listen to me, I am going to get you," Rose Cummings said. "I am waiting for the day that I am going face-to-face, face-to-face, and God is going to have to help me that day."
Christopher Cummings was an honors student at Old Dominion who wanted to follow in his uncle's footsteps of one day entering politics.
