Va., Md. Govs., D.C. Mayor Issue Metro Shake-Up Plan
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The governors of Virginia and Maryland and Washington's mayor are laying out a plan to change Metro's governing structure.
In response to a report that found that Metro's structure contributed to the system's deterioration in recent years, the plan released Monday recommends Metro's board of directors adopt a multiyear chairmanship with a regional focus.
A work group made up of the three jurisdictions' transportation department heads is expected to define the roles and responsibilities of the Metro board and its chairman and recommend a coordinated process for board appointments within six months.
The plan calls for the group to draft any legislation needed for governance changes within a year and federal, state and local governments to act on any legislation or Metro compact amendments within two years.
