U.S. Accused Cement Plant In Md. Of Pollution
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A federal complaint accuses the owner of a Hagerstown cement plant of violating the Clean Air Act and polluting the air.
The complaint by the Environmental Protection Agency was filed in federal court in Maryland against the plant's current owner, Holcim, and previous owner St. Lawrence Cement. The complaint says the Security Road plant has been emitting more than 100 tons a year of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants.
The complaint seeks thousands of dollars a day in fines and wants the plant shut until the problem is fixed.
William Bumpers, a lawyer for the company, says the company has already taken steps to curb pollution.
The complaint was filed in April and revealed on Wednesday when it was reported in a publication in Switzerland, where Holcim is based.
