University Of Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall Discusses Expectations For The Year
University of Maryland football head coach Randy Edsall joined the Norris and Davis Show on Baltimore's 105-7 THE FAN Thursday morning to discuss his expectations for the upcoming season. He begins by talking about CJ Brown, saying Brown has been having a "tremendous training camp so far," so they are looking for people to take second and third reps with the team. Coach Edsall then mentions Stefon Diggs, saying he has added about ten pounds over the offseason. They have been very impressed with his performance so far, so the team is trying to find more ways to get him the ball.
Coach Edsall mentions that UMD is having a Fan Appreciation Day this upcoming Saturday where they will be having a scrimmage and have the ability to get autographs. He then transitions to certain teams cutting the ability of their players to sign autographs, saying they have not changed anything and hope to not have to do so.
When asked about the transition into the Big 10 after this year, Coach Edsall claims they will worry about it after the year is over. However, the team has already begun recruiting new players, looking for players that are stronger and faster than those they would recruit were they still in the ACC.
Coach Edsall transitions to the whole Johnny Manziel autograph scandal and the fallout from it. The issue rose from Manziel allegedly being paid for his autographs. Coach Edsall has been adamant that players shouldn't be paid, but there should be some sort of stipend for all athletes. He says there are issues in all sports, so the stipend should be a set amount of money for each athlete. However, he is unsure of how to give the money to the players and if it should sit until they graduate.
Coach Edsall talks about his defense, saying many of his player have been stepping up after everyone from last year left. In fact, almost everyone has stepped up individually as leaders, which Coach Edsall thinks will make the group work better together. He believes this gives his defense a chance to be a very good unit this year.
Coach Edsall concludes by talking about the Wes Brown suspension handed down from the university. Coach Edsall cites violations of school standards as the reason Brown was suspended, even though all charges against him were dropped. Brown is working hard to be ready to come back to the team when he is eligible.
