Union Committee To Address Md. Prison Security
CRESAPTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland state workers union says it has formed a committee to suggest security improvements at the maximum-security North Branch Correctional Institution.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said Tuesday that a committee of nine workers will work with the prison warden and the state prison agency to develop recommendations for improving safety at the prison near Cumberland.
The news follows last week's meeting between union members and state Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Gary Maynard after an inmate stabbed a North Branch correctional officer.
The North Branch security chief has been reassigned because the injured officer wasn't told about a threatening note from an inmate.
Maynard has suggested tighter security when inmates move outside their cells.
