Unilever Ice Cream Plant In Hagerstown To Close
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Unilever ice cream plant in Hagerstown will close at the end of July, leaving about 390
employees without jobs.
Company spokesman Jeff Graubard says the employees were told in 2009 about plans to close the plant. Graubard tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown that the manufacturing jobs will be transferred to other Unilever facilities in the country.
He says Unilever is negotiating with a union that represents the workers on the issuance of severance packages.
Peter Thomas, executive director of the Western Maryland Consortium, says the employees will be eligible to receive job training after the factory closes. Thomas says the workers also will be eligible to receive up to six months of unemployment.
