Unilever Ends Ice Cream Production In Western Md.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Ice cream production has ended at a Hagerstown plant that supplied Good Humor bars and other frozen goodies for nearly 30 years.

The president of the United Steelworkers local that represents 391 plant workers said Thursday that the shutdown by British-Dutch conglomerate Unilever will affect the entire community.

Larry Lorshbaugh says he'll have to travel at least 70 miles to find another employer who could use his skills as a certified pasteurizer.

Unilever says it's consolidating production at plants in Tennessee, Missouri and Nevada.

The company said last month that the restructuring temporarily restricted its ability to supply certain products to ice-cream trucks in the Northeast.
