UMBC Avoids Upset, Outlasts Eastern 84-79 In OT
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Malik Garner scored 32 points, with 12 of those coming in overtime as UMBC outlasted Division-II Eastern University 84-79 Monday night.
The Retrievers (1-1) overcame a 10-point deficit and pulled within two on a free throw by Garner with 10 seconds remaining. Eastern's Caleb Knudsen split a pair of free throws and Rodney Elliot hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
Garner hit a triple, two free throws and a layup to put UMBC up by five. The Eagles wouldn't go down easy as Shaquan Turk had a three point play to cut the deficit to two, but Garner hit three of his last four free throws to cut Eastern's upset bid short.
Garner finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double and Elliot added 19 points.
UMBC suited just eight players, resulting in foul trouble as Brett Roseboro fouled out and four other Retrievers finished with four fouls.
