Ultimate Senior Sendoff: Towson Football Team Is 2 Wins Away From Its 1st National Title
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ)—Two wins from a national title. The seventh seeded Towson Tigers' journey to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision title continues--this time across the country in Washington.
Christie Ileto has more on the team's sendoff.
Their bags are packed. Emotions run deep.
"It does feel amazing to make history, but I don't think we're done yet," said Randall Harris, right tackle.
The Towson Tigers are ready to go.
"I'm really excited," said Alexander Disanzo, outside linebacker.
The road to the FCS semifinals starts at the field house Thursday.
"Towson hasn't been in this position ever before, so we're looking to continue to make history and play well," said Anthony Davis Jr., offensive lineman.
The team is fresh off a quarterfinal win against first seed Eastern Illinois.
Now, for the first time in their program's history, they're bound for the semifinals.
"Getting this far is pretty validating for these guys, for all the hard work they've put in, but there's a lot of work left to be done," said Rob Ambrose, head coach.
The Tigers head west to play the third seeded Eastern Washington Eagles.
This week, the school held an early graduation for eight senior football players and their families who will miss the ceremony for the weekend game.
"This was so special, just like the graduates," said Mary Schuster.
The Tigers know this won't be an easy fight. The Eagles are making its 10th playoff appearance since 1985 and won the national championship in 2010.
"They have a little bit of experience, but we have an older group up front and some great senior leadership on defense," Davis said.
And for many of the seniors, "I guess you can't go out any other way, and hopefully the dream isn't over. Hopefully we'll have another game next weekend," Disanzo said.
Win or lose, just playing in Saturday's game is the ultimate senior sendoff.
Kickoff for Saturday's game is 2 p.m. (Est), and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
The winner of Saturday's game heads to Texas for the NCAA FCS Championship on Jan. 4.
