Tubman Could Get Capitol Spot With Md.'s Hanson
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland lawmakers may have found an alternate passage for a statue of Harriet Tubman to the U.S. Capitol.
The Maryland Senate advanced a bill Friday seeking an exception for the state to place three statues in Congress' Statuary Hall.
States are limited to two statues and Maryland already has its two: likenesses of Charles Carroll and John Hanson, Colonial American revolutionaries and both white men.
Lawmakers had been seeking to replace the statue of Hanson with Tubman's likeness. But a compromise measure the Senate advanced would urge the state's Congressional delegation to push for an exception to add Tubman without removing Hanson.
