Tribute To Moms In Baltimore Is Being Reborn
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- On this Mother's Day weekend, one of the things that makes Baltimore unique is the Mothers' Garden.
Mike Schuh reports a tribute to the moms who raise their children in Baltimore is being reborn.
Occasionally, you can add by taking away.
"A lot of things were overgrown. This whole area was very overgrown," said Jim Bartlett, president of the Friends of the Mothers' Garden.
Volunteers have taken all that away, revealing an 85-year-old garden--a garden dedicated to mothers. It fell into neglect but Mayor William Donald Schaefer revitalized it nearly 30 years ago. But again, neglect claimed this proud hilltop.
"I just felt this was a jewel in the city and was forgotten and neglected," said volunteer Sherry Insley.
So now there's another try to restore faded glory. Instead of the city taking the lead, the community has stepped up.
"So we just started coming out on weekends, doing some guerilla gardening. That's how it started and got the ball rolling," Bartlett said.
By taking symbolic ownership of the care of this jewel box, the community is strengthened.
"I think human nature is to cling to community," said Tom Rybzynski.
"You gotta turn off the computer and TV and get outside and get your hands dirty. For me, that's good for the soul," Bartlett said.
Now to build on the success, volunteers are looking for corporate support.
If you'd like to become involved, that group has started a Facebook page. It's called The Friends of the Mothers' Garden.
The garden is located in Clifton Park at the intersection of Harford Road and Erdman Avenue.
