Trial Resumes In Case Of 72-Year Old Man Fatally Shot At Waverly Carryout
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The murder of a 72-year-old man at a carryout last year outraged the Waverly community.
One of the two teens charged with the killing pleaded guilty, and as Mike Schuh reports, the trial for the triggerman continued Friday.
The last thing 72-year-old night watchman for the Afro newspaper Charles Bowman saw were two teens--one with a gun.
Their robbery of a carryout in Waverly netted them a total of $13. None of it was from Bowman.
Michael Hunter shot the Vietnam vet through the heart.
But the neighborhood turned on the teens. As leads flooded in, within two weeks they were arrested.
"I was relieved that they were off the street," said Sandra VanWright, victim's stepdaughter.
Off the street and in jail. On Friday at Hunter's trial, the prosecution left no doubt that he pulled the trigger.
The homicide detective who has the case told the jury that there was another man inside the carryout. He showed him a photo array and he picked out Hunter as the man who fired the shot.
Hunter told police he wasn't there but at home. But police couldn't find anyone who could corroborate his alibi.
The trial is expected to resume on Monday. Earlier, Troy Taylor, the accomplice, refused to testify so the judge added five years to his 35-year sentence.
