Trial Resumes For Cop Accused In Death Of Woman & Child
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Testimony continues in the trial of a D.C. police officer charged in the deaths of his mistress and his young child.
Lawyers on Monday gave opening statements in the trial of Richmond Phillips, who faces life without the possibility of parole if convicted of murder. The trial continues on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Phillips in May 2011 killed his 20-year-old mistress, Wynetta Wright, and left their infant daughter to die in an overheated car. Prosecutors say the couple was embroiled in a paternity dispute and Phillips didn't want to have to pay child support.
His lawyer said his client didn't do it and that the evidence is circumstantial.
Jurors on Monday heard from Wright's cousin and her mother.
