Trial Begins This Week In Nightclub Slaying
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The trial of a Baltimore police officer charged with shooting an unarmed man to death outside a nightclub is set to begin this week.
After two trial postponements, pre-trial motions in the case of Officer Gahiji Tshamba are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.
He's charged with first-degree murder in the June 2010 slaying of Tyrone Brown, 32, an Iraq war veteran. Police say he fired 13 shots at Brown from his police department handgun, hitting Brown 12 times.
Tshamba's attorneys don't dispute that he shot Brown, but say he was acting in his role as a police officer. They say Tshamba intervened when he saw Brown grope a woman and the situation escalated.
Tshamba is being held without bail.
