Trial Begins For Shooting At Md. Apartment Complex
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- Trial is underway in Carroll County for a man charged in a non-fatal shooting at a Westminster apartment complex.
Montrell Troy Schumpert, of Columbia, faces charges including attempted first- and second-degree murder in the May 2011 shooting at Bishop Garth's apartments.
Authorities say Schumpert shot another man, Tony Boyd Jr., in the abdomen during an argument, and was carrying marijuana and a large amount of cash when he was arrested.
The Carroll County Times reports that Schumpert's lawyer told jurors during his opening statement that the witnesses were too intoxicated at the time to be trusted.
Prosecutors don't have a gun from the shooting.
