Train Fire Disrupts Service On Metro's Red Line
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Metro says a mechanical problem started a fire on train at the Silver Spring station that disrupted red line service between Takoma and Forest Glen.
The fire broke out under an empty train at the station around 6 p.m. Tuesday and Montgomery County Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham says the fire was extinguished a half hour later.
No injuries were reported, but service through the station was halted for a time. By 7:30 p.m. some service was restored through the station, though passengers were only allowed to exit until full service was restored about 9:20 p.m.
Graham says the fire may have involved a "shoe" that conducts power between the electrified third rail and the train or an insulator.
Metro says foul play is not suspected.
